Marie Brown’s story begins on the West Side of Chicago, where she grew up in a low-income, imperfect home. Those early years taught her more about resilience, responsibility, and compassion than any classroom ever could. In a family where stability wasn’t always guaranteed, Marie became the steady one. The helper, the caregiver, the child who stepped in when things were hard because someone had to.

Those early experiences didn’t break her. They awakened something in her, a deep understanding of what it feels like to be unseen, and a commitment to offer others the kind of patient, loving care she knew could change a person’s life. That lived experience became the heartbeat of her calling.

As she stepped into the healthcare field years later, Marie carried that same way of caring into every room she entered. She understood the quiet fears of those who had been overlooked. She understood the determination of families doing their best with limited resources. She understood how deeply people needed to feel safe, respected, and truly seen.

For more than two decades, Marie has supported seniors and families across Chicago through moments of need, transition, and healing. Her work within healthcare systems sharpened her awareness of how much dignity matters, especially for seniors, families in crisis, and LGBTQ+ older adults who often carried the quiet weight of wondering if they would be treated with dignity. A reality Marie felt called to change so every LGBTQ+ older adult can experience care that makes them feel safe, valued, and genuinely seen.

She witnessed moments of beautiful care, but she also saw the gaps: rushed interactions, overlooked stories, and people who needed someone willing to slow down and truly notice them. Marie built Soulful Hands on a clear set of values she learned early in life: compassion for every person, respect for every identity and story, and the belief that trust is earned through consistent, human-centered care.

She knew that quality care should be accessible, affirming, culturally aware, and rooted in humanity, not shaped only by clinical knowledge, but by lived compassion. Today, she leads with the same strength she developed as a young girl in a home that didn’t always have enough. She learned the importance of giving enough care, enough respect, enough humanity.

Outside of her work, Marie finds joy with her children, long walks by the lake, and simple moments of peace that refuel her spirit. These grounding moments shape the gentleness and presence she brings into her leadership and her mission.
